Armed man enters Broward courthouse

An armed man entered the exit door at Broward's main courthouse in Fort Lauderdale Friday morning.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, about 9:24 a.m. BSO deputies in the lobby of the courthouse witnessed a man entering the lobby through an exit door.

BSO Deputies immediately approached him as he proceeded to sit on the floor and put a gun to his chest.

Deputies, with the assistance of Ft. Lauderdale Police, were able to get the man to put the gun down. The gun was recovered and the subject was taken into custody without incident. No one was injured.

Jackie Lloyd, court operations supervisor in the traffic division, said an employee alerted her that there was a man sitting in the lobby by the escalator pointing a gun at himself.

After she glanced to confirm that was the situation, she called courthouse security on the emergency line and cleared the area.

"It wasn't really chaotic," she said. "He was just quietly sitting down there with a gun aiming at himself. ... We had customers there -- people coming down the escalator stepping right over him like business as usual."

BSO quickly surrounded the man, Lloyd said.

The courthouse at 201 SE 6th Street has security workers and metal detectors at the front entrance near the exit doors but there isn't an officer standing immediately next to the exit door.
