Two motorists shot on major Fla. roadways

Two major South Florida roadways became shooting scenes Tuesday night, leaving two motorists hospitalized.

In one case, in Broward, the shooter is still being sought and in the other case, in Miami-Dade, the suspected gunman is in custody.

In Broward, the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Sheridan Street were shut down for two hours after a motorist was shot on the highway and then crashed his SUV, police said.

The incident began at about 6:30 p.m. and created a traffic nightmare at the end of rush hour, with the backup stretching more than three miles to Interstate 595.

An 18-year-old man who was driving south on I-95 apparently was shot just north of the Hollywood Boulevard exit and then lost control of his black Chevrolet Tahoe south of the exit, where he crashed into the concrete median, said Hollywood police Lt. Manny Marino.

The man was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood with what Marino said was a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his upper body.

"He's telling us he doesn't know who shot him or why he was shot," Marino said.

The man, whose identity was not released Tuesday night, told police the shooter was in a dark-colored sedan, but the victim was unable to provide a specific description, Marino said.

Hollywood police are investigating the shooting, and the Florida Highway Patrol is handling the crash investigation.

Police ask that anyone with information about the shooting contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).

In the Miami-Dade case, a driver was shot during what FHP called a road rage incident that happened along southbound I-75 leading to the ramp connecting to the Palmetto Expressway (State Road 826), according to WPLG-Ch. 10.

The incident happened shortly after 10 p.m.

According to WPLG, a man from Virginia was heading to Miami International Airport when an altercation began with another motorist.

After the two vehicles pulled off the travel lanes, the two drivers got out and began fighting. One of the drivers, a 37-year-old man from Weston, pulled a gun and shot the other motorist, WPLG reported.

The shooting victim was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition while the other man was taken into police custody, the station reported.

No other information was immediately available.
