Police: Handcuffed man jumps into Biscayne Bay

A handcuffed man jumped into Biscayne Bay, while he was running away from a Miami police officer early Wednesday -- prompting a massive search.

Authorities had been searching for the man using a Coast Guard helicopter and Miami's marine patrol since he disappeared about 3 a.m.

A police officer responded to reports that someone had been breaking into cars in the 700 block of Northeast 29th Street.

The officer found the suspect and handcuffed him. But the unidentified man took off running and jumped into the water, said Napier Velazquez, a Miami police spokesman.

The suspect is thought to be in his late 40s to early 50s, about 6-feet tall, 140 pounds, bald and was last seen wearing a white tank top and blue jeans.

Police urge anyone with information to call the Miami Police Department at 305-603-6640 or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
