The Miami Herald has received dozens of offers by email, phone or the comments section of this story to help the Smith family. Mr. Smith's lawyers, Monica Vigues-Pitan, senior attorney with Legal Services of Greater Miami, and Hiriam Harmatz, an attorney with Florida Legal Services, offered the following statement to well-wishers:
