Ruth Behar was six years old when her family fled Fidel Castro's Cuba in 1962, leaving their apartment a half block from a synagogue in Havana and a way of life they loved. They settled more than a thousand miles away in New York, learned a new language and created a new life. But Havana's Jewish community remained in Behar's heart.
