On Jan. 8, 1959, 50 years ago this month, Fidel Castro rode into Havana on a column of tanks to mark the triumph of the Cuban revolution, cheered on by throngs of flag-waving Cubans and heralding what many hoped would be a new dawn for the island, the hemisphere and the world. It was a day that would forever mark Carmen Vallejo's life.
