For me, summer in Miami is like a warm embrace that leaves you all glowy and happy. In other words, we know the heat is coming, but there’s no need to get hot and bothered by it. In this Summer edition, the team at INDULGE has sourced an array of places, products and people that can help you make the most of the summer season, and, yes, may even leave you wishing it were longer.

Let’s start at Upper Buena Vista, an open-air shopping and dining marketplace, where you’ll long to bottle up the cool breeze that flows through on a summer afternoon. Here you can discover eclectic micro-boutiques such as Pure Soul, which features naturally inspired styles with a bohemian flair. Stay awhile and sample the delicious fresh fish bowls at Kraken Lab, or wander over to a spectacular 80-year-old shade tree, offering visitors a respite from the sun while they contemplate the rest of their day.

Of course, when the summer sun isn’t blazing, it’s often raining, and we Miamians are accustomed to afternoon clouds that thunder into steamy showers. But one of our town’s real rainmakers is Rolando Aedo of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau. Rolando and his team deliver buckets of summer fun by introducing us to chilled-out spas and remarkable local restaurants as part of Miami Spa and Spice months.

And while I always enjoy some local R & R, planning a nearby getaway can really recharge the batteries. This month, our Staycation takes you from the Magic City to the Magic Kingdom, where South Florida parents inevitably find themselves at one time or another. We compare two luxurious retreats – the Four Seasons and the Ritz-Carlton – to determine which comes out ahead in various important categories. But with resorts this posh, how can you lose?

Summer also can be a wonderful excuse to lighten up your wardrobe with crisp whites, straw hats and cool shades, like the must-have Beverly sunglasses from Alice + Olivia, showcased in The Local. Style maven Claudia Miyar selects a handful of her favorite gingham pieces sure to make anyone’s closet a happier, hipper place.

Prefer an even sweeter summer treat? While Ube Macapuno, Purple Rain and The Highland Truffle may sound like classics from an ’80s mixtape, tune in to Miami’s most intriguing artisan ice cream flavors in Dish. We’ll show you where you can lick the heat with ingenious ingredients that will make your tastebuds do a happy dance. And if you’ve never experienced a nitrogen-chilled scoop, head over to Lulu’s in Edgewater and sample one of my favorites, Honey Lavender. Mmmmm… delicious and so refreshing!

We hope this issue of INDULGE warms you up to summer and the bounty of options our city offers us. Explore these pages for treasures that, as the GMCVB’s new marketing slogan says, can only be “Found in Miami.”
