While teaching and traveling in Thailand, Danielle Conte was dazzled by the ubiquity — and versatility — of coconut oil. She watched locals use it for everything: moisturizer, hair conditioner, nutritional supplement, makeup remover, bug-bite soother.
“By the time I got home to Florida, I was such a coconut-oil advocate that I was gifting it to people in mason jars,” Conte said. Her friends prompted her to think bigger. The result? Conscious Coconut, a line of travel-friendly organic coconut oil that’s been embraced by top local resorts (1 Hotel South Beach stocks it in every room) and boutiques, including Flow at the Sacred Space.

Conscious Coconut gives back
Conte sources the finest coconuts (“They’re not all created equal!”) and formed a fair-trade co-op that hand-presses the oil in small batches to preserve its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory powers. Once the products arrive in the United States, they’re packaged by adults with developmental disabilities. For every tube sold, Conscious Coconut gives a child a meal through Feeding America — 120,000 so far.
Untouched by machines, the luxuriously light oil sinks right, leaving skin radiant. The fact that the graphic tube looks super-glamorous in a beach bag is an added bonus. consciouscoconut.com.
