A strong laser, sharp scalpel or frosty liquid nitrogen used to be the most effective ways to remove raised brown spots — those annoying growths that can crop up with age. The problem was, they all involved some pain and potential scarring. Now, dermatologists have a kinder, gentler solution: Newly approved by the FDA, Eskata uses a highly concentrated dose of hydrogen peroxide to do away with those pigmented lesions.
“You carefully dab it on, it binds to the area, and over the next few days the lesion peels away,” said Dr. Christopher O’Connell of Skin Associates of South Florida, one of the local dermatologists now offering the pain-free treatment. “You might need a touch-up, depending on the size of the spot, but there’s a good chance it will be gone.”
