Miami is forever on island time, but who doesn’t appreciate a weekend trip<\/a>? Whether that means the beach, sporting events or exploring the culture and cuisine of another city, it’s always nice to get a change of scenery. But which trips from Miami are budget-friendly?<\/p>

To find out, we spoke to JP Mancini, the Owner and President of SeaEO Luxury Boat Charters<\/a>, who focuses on helping travelers discover affordable ways to explore South Florida \u2014 and he had quite a few ideas.<\/p>

“With its vibrant culture, tropical climate, and easy access to nearby destinations, Miami is the ultimate launchpad for affordable weekend getaways,” he tells Miami Herald. “Whether you’re staying local or island-hopping, there’s no shortage of fun and budget-conscious ways to explore the best of South Florida and beyond.”<\/p>

Miami-area day and overnight trips<\/h3>

Water Adventures: <\/strong>Biscayne National Park<\/strong> <\/a>is less than 90 minutes from downtown Miami. This is a great option for kayakers, snorkelers, and boaters.<\/p>

“Save some money by packing a picnic, and bringing your own gear to save on rentals,” Mancini says. “From here, you can explore coral reefs, mangroves, and shipwrecks without spending much more than the cost of gas.”<\/p>

Where to Stay:<\/strong> Forget hostels and budget motels \u2014 the Historic Hotel Redland<\/a> <\/strong>is quintessential mom-and-pop lodging. It was built in 1904 and has a great martini bar, a restaurant and live music on the weekends… all for about $80 per night.<\/p>

Affordably Historic: <\/strong>For more of a road trip (plus a ferry or sea plane), adventurers and historians alike love Dry Tortugas National Park<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>

“Once there, you will be able to enjoy pristine beaches, the rich history of Fort Jefferson,” Mancini said. “And it has some of the clearest snorkeling the U.S. has to offer. This can be had for a fraction of the cost of most Caribbean resorts.”<\/p>

Where to Stay<\/strong>: About a mile from the Dry Tortugas National Park ferry is the Southernmost Inn<\/strong><\/a>. It’s a historic building that was once a cigar factory, and has since been restored into an inn. For just $100 a night it has a pool and shaded patios… but take note, it’s adults-only.<\/p>

Amazing Islamorda: <\/strong>Just an hour outside Miami is Islamorada<\/strong><\/a> and the Upper Keys. The town has great restaurants and clear ocean water \u2014 all for a super low cost.<\/p>

“There, you can discover world-class fishing, quaint beachside caf\u00e9s, and crystal-clear waters without the Key West price tag,” Mancini tells us. “A day on the water with a group fishing charter or a BYOB sandbar cruise offers luxury on a budget.”<\/p>

Where to Stay: Pelican Key Largo Cottages<\/a> <\/strong>give you a little more space for large groups or families. It has beach access, kayaks, BBQs and a fishing dock. Less than $150 per night for all that is a great deal.<\/p>

International flavor without breaking the bank<\/h3>

Rich Culture<\/strong>: Even though the Dominican Republic<\/strong><\/a> isn’t \u2014 say \u2014 a boat ride away, it’s easily accessible from South Florida with short direct flights that can be under $100<\/a>. And the experience is truly next-level.<\/p>

“Santo Domingo offers rich colonial history and culture at wallet-friendly prices,” Mancini tells us. “Punta Cana gives travelers access to picturesque beaches and low-cost resorts perfect for a quick escape.”<\/p>

Where to Stay<\/strong>: In Santo Domingo, enjoy the many amenities at the Dominican Fiesta Hotel<\/a><\/strong> for just $88 per night. It includes access to a gym, spa, restaurant, pool and hot tub. Or if you’re visiting Punta Cana, try the Sol Caribe Suites<\/strong><\/a>. It’s a short walk to the beach and costs less than $100 per night… sold.<\/p>

International Vibes Without the Passport<\/strong>: Yes, we know Puerto Rico<\/a><\/strong> is a U.S. territory. But Mancini argues it feels like an international getaway \u2014 without requiring a passport for U.S. residents. In San Juan, visitors can enjoy the rich Spanish colonial history, Caribbean beaches, and lively nightlife. <\/p>

“Budget airlines frequently fly from Miami, and affordable stays, especially in Old San Juan or nearby beach areas, make this a great choice for a cultural escape that\u2019s easy on the wallet,” Mancini says. <\/p>

Where to Stay: <\/strong>The Tuscan-style Canario Boutique Hotel<\/strong><\/a> is situated in San Juan’s vibrant Condado neighborhood. Within close proximity to local beaches, bars, restaurants and museums, it’s in a great location with an outdoor pool, 24-hour concierge access and laundry.
