Hungry for Miami eats? Guess who will bring it for free

On-demand restaurant delivery companies in Miami can chew on this: Amazon Restaurants is now their competitor.

Amazon on Tuesday announced that its Prime members in Miami can now receive free one-hour delivery more than 60 local restaurants, such as Baires Grill, Icebox Café, Brother Jimmy’s BBQ, La Provence, Madero, Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink, Morgans Restaurant and The Gang Miami. “Miami’s rich culture and vibrant restaurant scene makes it the ideal place to try new restaurants and cuisines from around the world,” said Gus Lopez, general manager of Amazon Restaurants, in the announcement.

Using the Prime Now mobile app or by visiting the new Prime Now website, Miami customers can browse menus, place orders and track their delivery in real time. Amazon said there are no menu markups and delivery on all orders is free for Prime members. If a customer finds a restaurant item that is priced higher than the regularly-priced item on the restaurant’s current online menu within 24 hours of placing the order, Amazon said it will refund the customer the price of the item.

Prime members can download the Prime Now app or visit the new Prime Now website to enter their zip code and see if the service is available in their area. In zip codes where restaurant delivery is available, customers will see Restaurants on the home page.

On-demand services, delivering everything from groceries and alcohol to transportation and gas, have been surging in South Florida. In restaurant delivery, Caviar, Postmates and Favor along with local competitors have been duking it out, and most charge a delivery fee. In other markets, on-demand giant Uber is delivering, too.

Amazon Restaurants, launched last fall in Seattle, has expanded to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Austin, among other cities. On Tuesday, it also rolled out its service in Atlanta in addition to Miami. Amazon has been offering one- or two-hour delivery on other products in Miami since last December. Amazon Prime is an annual membership program costing $99 a year, offering free delivery and other benefits from the online e-commerce giant.
