Famed conductor Michael Tilson Thomas has announced he’ll be stepping down as music director of the San Francisco Symphony. But Thomas — better known as MTT — plans to continue as co-founder and artistic director of Miami-based New World Symphony, the national orchestral academy, according to NWS spokesman Craig Hall.
“MTT’s commitment to the New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy, remains unchanged,” Hall wrote in an email. “As NWS Co-Founder and Artistic Director, he continues to lead in the development of our cutting-edge education program and heighten the institution’s impact on Miami, South Florida and beyond.
The New World Symphony celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2018. It was co-founded by Thomas and Lin and Ted Arison, the late founder of Carnival Cruises.
Thomas announced Tuesday he would conclude his 25-year tenure at the San Francisco Symphony in June 2020, when he is 75.
