Melania Trump bought her RNC dress online

The Washington Post

OK, so Melania Trump doesn’t get huge props for her speech at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland Monday evening (hello hashtag #famousmelaniatrumpquotes), but you have to admit, the former model looked pretty darned good. OK so maybe Melania lifted a few lines from Michelle Obama’s speech at the 2008 Democratic convention? Seriously, now. There are worse women to emulate.

In case you wondering: The first lady wannabe’s choice of designer was Roksanda Ilincic, a Serbian-born dressmaker based in London, reports The New York Times.

Why this kind of matters: Michelle Obama usually chooses American designers for major events. FLOTUS donned Maria Pinto (2008) and Tracy Reese (2012) for her convention speeches, and we’ve seen the bonafide fashion plate in various U.S. labels. Some of Obama’s picks have included such classic designers as Tracy Reese, Ralph Lauren, Vera Wang and Michael Kors. She’s even been known to wear straight-off- the-rack stuff from shockingly accessible, affordable retailers like J. Crew, H&M and Black House White Market.

Trump’s dress wasn’t exactly affordable, but not over the top for a billionaire’s wife. The 46-year-old mother of one reportedly bought her white, bell-sleeve frock from Netaporter.com, a campaign spokeswoman told WWD. The so-called Margot dress currently retails on the site in pink (a more First Lady-ish color, just saying) for $1,365 in the “Sale” section. Mel’s white, silk cotton one, according to E!, is sold out.

Strategic planning on Melania’s part? It’s unclear why the skincare founder picked that designer or outfit, and we probably won’t be able to get a comment out of her anytime soon — about much.

So we can only guess. As per the Times, Ilincic was born in Serbia, which was part of Yugoslavia back then, like Melania’s native Slovenia. She has dressed a variety of international figures including, most recently, Samantha Cameron. the wife of former Prime Minister David Cameron, as well as the Duchess of Cambridge.

We save the most interesting tidbit for last: Another global superstar who has often donned Roksanda Ilincic: Michelle Obama herself.

Yep, like we said. There are worse women to emulate.
