For Flashback Friday, we bring you the infamous Mariah Carey meltdown of July 2001. The pop diva was on MTV’s Total Request Live and began saying odd things; e.g., “I just want one day off when I can go swimming and eat ice cream and look at rainbows.” A hospital stay subsequently followed. Reason cited by reps: exhaustion. The mother of two has since kept things pretty much together, except for a few tipsy appearances.

These days, Mimi may want to stay off live TV. Sources tells Life & Style the singer has had a rough summer, what with rumors of marital strife and an unsuccessful album, and are fearing for her mental health. Another source tells L&S that Nick Cannon wanted to leave his wife of six years a while ago but feared how she would, um, react.


New York’s highest court is set to hear arguments by jazz composer Duke Ellington’s heirs to reinstate their lawsuit against publisher EMI seeking half the royalties from foreign sales of his music. The 2010 suit alleges breach of the 1961 standard songwriter royalty contract the late pianist, bandleader and composer signed with Mills Music, predecessor of EMI. It calls for an even split of net revenue.


After three years, the Kardashian family is closing a store at The Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas that was fashioned as a “celebrity lifestyle boutique.” Kardashian Khaos will close Oct. 30. Elsewhere in the reality family’s world, Kim’s husband, Kanye West, was briefly hospitalized in Australia for a migraine.


Miley Cyrus is New York Fashion Week’s latest celebrity designer. Cyrus debuted her funky jewelry, made of children’s alphabet beads, little toys and other colorful stuff, at Jeremy Scott’s show Wednesday in a downtown gallery space. Photographers swarmed Cyrus, dressed in a bright ensemble of trousers and (naturally) bra top.
