Need something to do with the kiddos Friday night? You’re in luck. The Wiggles — often referred to as the Aussie Fab Four are in town — Founding member Anthony Field, along with Emma Watkins, Simon Pryce and Lachlan Gillespie, will be joined on stage by a colorful cast of toddler-loving characters for an evening of music, merriment and definitely no tantrums. We spoke to Gillespie before their stop at Coral Springs Center for the Arts:
What can locals expect from the “Ready, Steady, Wiggle” show?
It’s packed with high energy dancing and singing and is a lot of fun for children and parents. It’s also very intimate, featuring lots of nursery rhymes as well as the hit wiggly songs like Hot Potato, Fruit Salad yummy yummy and Do the Propeller. All the characters will be there: Dorothy the Dinosaur, Wags the Dog, Henry the Octopus and Captain Feathersword. We can’t wait to see everyone.

We have learned an incredible amount from Anthony. He was a early childhood educator, and I think his background in this as well as the colors and the simple catchy songs based on rock and roll all gel to create something that has been a worldwide hit for 24 years. It’s about understanding the children and learning what they respond to and what they like and just encouraging them. We never talk down to the children or talk at them; we simply say, ‘Let’s have a sing and a dance together,’ and they love it.
What is the most common question children ask you?
Well, our main audience, being preliterate, don’t actually know what a question is, so we don’t so much get asked questions as much as some classic and wonderful comments. The children just enjoy telling you things. So we get things like, “I have a dog,” or “I like apples!”
What is the chemistry with you all off stage?
Brilliant. We are together as a group for what would have to be 300 days out of the year, and if we are not on tour together we are in the studio writing the new albums. On our down time we play golf and go fishing. It really is a family environment at Wiggles world, and I think that comes across in the shows.
Any other projects you want to talk about?
Something very exciting in the works is a motion picture that is being lined up to start shooting at the start of 2015. It has been written and will be directed by Ben Elton [The Young Ones, We Will Rock You], which is an absolute thrill.
