Screen gems: What’s ahead in movies for the week of July 6

Opening Friday

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (PG-13): In this sequel to 2011’s ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes,’ Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his band of genetically gifted apes is threatened by human survivors of a virus. Could this mean war? What do you think?

Rage (R): You’re never going to believe what reformed criminal Paul Maguire does when his daughter is kidnapped: He sends the perpetrators a big check and tells them he’s sorry he didn’t get it to them sooner. Ha ha! Just kidding. He goes on a murderous rampage to seek justice. Nicolas Cage stars, and if that doesn’t scare you, nothing will.

Life Itself (R): This documentary, directed by Steve James ( Hoop Dreams), examines the life of beloved film critic Roger Ebert, who died in 2013.

Venus in Fur (Not rated): Director Roman Polanski adapts Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s novel about an actress (Emmanuelle Seigner) who tries to persuade a director (Mathieu Amalric) she’s right for a part. This version moves the action from New York to Paris.
