H1N1 vaccination clinics in Miami-Dade and Broward
As H1N1 vaccine supplies make their way to South Florida, the number of vaccination sites is growing. Here's a list of where to get a dose, and some guidelines.
The fight against H1N1 swine flu is picking up in South Florida. By midweek, 436,000 doses were available in Miami-Dade, and nearly 50,000 doses were available in Broward.
Much of the vaccine so far is going to school-age children, but doses are available for other people in high-priority groups.
Here is a list of clinics in Miami-Dade and Broward offering H1N1 vaccinations, as of Wednesday, Oct. 21. Vaccinations are based on availability and ID requirements may vary, so call the clinic first.
Until supplies are sufficient to serve everyone, vaccinations are limited to priority groups at greatest risk of harm from swine flu.
Those groups are: pregnant women; caretakers of infants under 6 months of age; young people 2 to 24; people 25 to 64 who have chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes or suppressed immune systems, and healthcare workers, emergency personnel and other first responders who might come in direct contact with flu victims. People over 65, even those with chronic conditions, are not considered a priority group because the CDC believes they have some immunity to H1N1 because of past exposure.
Vaccinations are also available for priority groups through private physicians.
Additional clinics are expected to offer vaccinations as supplies arrive. For updates on new vaccination sites and other H1N1 information, visit Florida's Flu Safety website at www.myflusafety.com or the county health department websites at www.dadehealth.org and www.browardchd.org.
