How does the digital subscription work?
Some portions of MiamiHerald.com will remain free; your access to other portions will be limited without a digital subscription.

Each time your computer or smartphone visits our site, your use of the site’s pages are counted. Some portions of our site, like our homepage (the first page you come to on the site), our section fronts (the “front” page of the Local News, Sports, Features, and Business sections of the site), Dealsaver, and all advertising will remain fully accessible, which means you’ll continue to have unlimited access to those pages. But the story-level pages, photo and video galleries, commenting and opinions, breaking news, obituaries and other content will have limited access. A certain number of these limited access pages will be available for free within a 30-day period. Once you reach your free access limit, if you don’t have a digital subscription, you’ll be required to subscribe or wait until the next 30-day period to access them.

With a digital subscription, you will have unlimited access to the entire website and your use will not be limited. A digital subscription also includes access to our mobile site, mobile apps, iPad apps, and the Digital Newspaper (e-Edition) – an electronic replica of the paper.

Can I comment or read the comments without paying for a digital subscription?
You will be able to read and post comments on stories during your limited access period. Once you have reached your allotment of stories, you would need to log in with a digital subscription to continue your access.

On the website, our commenting system is powered by Facebook. You will need to log in with your Facebook.com registration account in order to comment. This account is separate from your Miami Herald Plus+ account.

On our iPad and mobile apps, the commenting system is also separate. If you wish to comment on that platform, you’ll need to create a Miami Herald mobile account. This is done right in the app.

Although we have various systems for commenting, you can create your account using the same email address and password that you used for your Miami Herald Plus+ account. That will enable you to use the same email address and password combination for all three platforms. We are working to unify the platforms and hope to simply this to one universal login in the future.

Will I be able to use my iPhone or Android app without paying for a digital subscription?
Yes, but you will need a digital subscription to read stories once your allocated pages are used each 30-day period. Depending on the app downloaded, you may also be able to purchase an app-only subscription via the app’s interface. App-only subscriptions are billed by either Apple (iOS apps) or Google (Google Play / Android apps).

If I am a subscriber to a Miami Herald app, do I need to buy a separate digital subscription now?
You can continue your subscription to the individual apps. However to get the best value, you may want to consider a digital subscription that gives you access to all of the apps for one low price. iOS users: If you are having trouble accessing your app only subscription, click on the “restore subscription” button in the app. Note: For this to work, you must be logged-in to your iTunes account with the same account that was used to purchase the subscription.

Why isn’t digital free anymore?
The world of news and information keeps changing, and the newspaper industry continues to be at the forefront of that change. For more than one hundred years, The Miami Herald has provided our community with local and world news in a printed format, conveniently delivered to your door once every day. Technological advances of the last decade provide us all with the convenience of mobile phones, tablets, and an array of social media channels, and our readers want that same instant access to their newspaper. As such, we have transformed our business, restructured and retrained our staffs, developed new skill sets to deliver breaking news through a variety of platforms, and become 24/7 information specialists. These changes have resulted in a new business model. The cost of producing our news coverage is now spread across the various channels we provide.
