Simmon delivers for Davie Broncos in playoff opener
Denzel Simmon ran for more than 60 yards, scored and had an interception as the Davie Broncos 90s edged the Sunrise Gators 6-0 in the American Youth Football League playoff opener.
Quinn Dempsey was 2 for 3 passing and sealed the win with an interception. Zaequan Baker rushed for more than 50 yards. Logan Giordano had two receptions and an interception. Jake Lindemann, Kolbe Adsunger, Christian Maffett and Hunter Goode blocked well.
Raekwon Mobley again led the defense in tackles. Chase Donnahoe, Zaekwon Baker, Elijah Moore, Frankie Heran, Dannie Sanders, Daniel Colon, Christian Maffet, Tom Colletti, Logan Giordano, Ethan Chiappelli and Johnnie Hughes made tackles. Maffet recovered a fumble with help from Colletti.
120: PLAYOFFS: COCONUT CREEK EAGLES 8, DAVIE 0: For the Broncos, Willie Williams made nine tackles. Brandon Morris had seven tackles. Nicholas Rivero recorded five tackles. Derall Marshall had four tackles. John Cassidy, Robert Foy and Russell Moore each had two tackles. Joshua Osburn added one.
Stephen Calvert completed six of 12 passes for 138 yards. Jerel Ricketts had two catches for 66 yards. Foy made two receptions for 40 yards. Chris Radler caught a 25-yard pass, and Osburn had a seven-yard catch.
Williams had 14 carries for 46 yards. Osburn gained 10 yards. Morris had six yards.
FOOTBALL
PLANTATION
The Plantation Wildcats 120s beat the Coral Springs Chargers 8-0 in the opening round of the American Youth Football League playoffs.
Jake Rizzo scored the winner in the second quarter on a 30-yard run. He also added the two-pointer. The defense did not allow a first down and forced four turnovers, including an interception and a fumble recovery by Matt Martinez and Caskie Kidd, respectively.
Jagger Quintero, Elijah Leacock, Garret Rivera, Matt Martinez, Jeremy Mendonca, Ryan DeNunzio, Nolan Rodriguez, Nick Villareal, Keno Clarke and Kidd also excelled on defense.
135: PLAYOFFS: PLANTATION 14, COCONUT CREEK EAGLES 0: Zay Kennedy had 16 carries for 108 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown run. Trevon Lee returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for the winning score, and Andrew DiRocco kicked a two-pointer.
Darrien McIntyre ran 10 times for 46 yards. Drew Nolan had a four-yard run. Jeremiah Watson had two carries for eight yards.
The defense allowed 21 yards passing and negative six yards rushing. Game ball recipient Daren Sparks made three sacks. Lee and McIntyre each received a game ball.
COOPER CITY
Jesse Rivera scored the winner on a 10-yard run in overtime as the Cooper City Cowboys Pee Wees defeated the Boca Raton Jets 14-6 in the opening round of the American Youth Football League playoffs.
Quarterback Jack O'Malley scored on a five-yard run in regulation. After allowing an early touchdown, the defense shut out the Jets the remainder of the game.
Tavarius Robinson had a fumble recovery. After Rivera scored in overtime, Leighton Lunan kicked a two-pointer. Jeshua Castillo and Sebastian Lohier were Offensive MVPs. Ryan Garcia was defensive MVP and Branden Williams the Special Teams MVP.
COCONUT CREEK
Kahalil Herbert was outstanding on defense and offense as the Coconut Creek Eagles 110s opened the American Youth Football League playoffs by beating the Davie Broncos 12-0.
