Like they did in the district semifinal against Coral Springs Charter, the rotation of taller middle hitters Lauren Gillespie and Raneisha Lamar was just too much for Boca Raton-St. Andrew's as Pompano defeated the host Scots 25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 27-25 in a Class 3A region quarterfinal on Tuesday.
The Tornadoes (14-9) reached their first region semifinal, playing North Broward Prep on Nov. 10 in a rematch of the district final won by the Eagles in a thrilling five games.
Tied at one game on Tuesday, Kelsey Cortina served well, and the 6-2 Lamar was strong in the middle with four kills including a block for a kill to give Pompano a 23-19 lead. Lamar then added a kill off a set from Alexis Arenal to extend the lead, 24-19, en route to the crucial game three win.
In game four, St. Andrew's (18-6) would not quit, rallying three times to force extra play thanks to Taylor Kennedy (five kills with a tip and six service points with two aces) and Elizabeth Boshart (five kills with three tips and an ace).
Pompano countered with sophomore Peyton Schlosser's three kills (one block), Lamar's five kills (one block) and the 6-0 Gillespie's three kills including the match clincher.
Arenal finished with 24 assists. Amanda Shawver had 11 digs and 11 service points (three aces), and Stephanie Pellitteri had four kills. Schlosser added 13 service points (five aces) and eight kills.
Pellitteri had six service points with two aces in game four. Her sophomore sister, Cristina, had two kills (tip) in game three and a kill in game four. Cortina had five service points in game three.
Freshman Savanah Davis had a block in game three, and Carliegh Calhoun added a kill. Arenal and Schlosser each had two aces in game three. Sade Barnswell had a service point in game four.
Class 5A: Boca Raton-Spanish River d. Nova 25-20, 25-11, 25-17: Olivia Mesner, a junior transfer from North Broward Prep, led the host Sharks (20-7). She had eight kills in a close game one. Spanish River pulled away in game two as she added four more kills (block, tip).
Nova's sound defense had trouble handling the serve of libero Maddy Davell in game one and Alex Burgess in game two. Sara Saxner and Cassie Thompson each had three kills for the Titans (17-6) in the opener, but Spanish River kept Nova off ballance, finding spots.
