Cowboys 100s make a huge comeback

With a playoff spot on the line, the Cooper City Optimist Cowboys 100s defeated the Boca Raton Jets 33-0 in the American Youth Football League.

After starting the season 1-5, the Cowboys won four of their next five games to reach the playoffs.

``The lesson learned by all the players and coaches is never give up,'' Cooper City's Jeff Bernstein said. ``Everyone associated with the team remained positive throughout the tough times, and the Cowboys' gritty attitude prevailed.''

Against Boca Raton, Jonathan Miller had an interception, a sack and a tackle. Darrell Wise made three tackles, and Angel Cajina had two tackles and a fumble recovery.

Zachary Bernstein had seven completions for 118 yards and two touchdowns. Joseph Ruma had 86 yards rushing, a touchdown and 12 yards receiving. Case Correa had 34 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Cole Correa ran for 36 yards and a touchdown. Jason Brown made four receptions for 83 yards and two touchdowns. He also recorded two sacks and recovered a fumble.

FOOTBALL

DAVIE

Stephen Calvert completed 4 of 12 passes for 38 yards and two touchdowns as the Davie Broncos 120s defeated the West Pines Wildcats 34-0 in the American Youth Football League.

Robert Foy had three catches for 28 yards and a touchdown. Jerel Ricketts caught a 10-yard touchdown pass. Willie Williams had 15 carries for 74 yards and a touchdown. Ricketts had six carries for 33 yards and a touchdown. Joshua Osborn gained 14 yards, and Russell Moore added a 5-yard run.

Williams made eight tackles, and Brandon Morris had five tackles and recovered a fumble. Morris also scored on an interception return. Nicholas Rivero had two tackles, and Derall Marshall and Foy each had a tackle and a sack.

Mark Pierre recovered a fumble, and John Cassidy, David Jayne, Josh Smythers and Ricketts added tackles.

PEE WEES: WEST PINES 13, DAVIE 6: For the Broncos, Derrick Foy had 16 carries for 83 yards and a touchdown. Zack Maldonado ran 12 times for 48 yards. Foy also had four tackles and a fumble recovery. Ryan Howle made three tackles.

90: WEST PINES 33, DAVIE 13: Zaequan Baker and Elijah Moore led the playoff-bound Broncos in rushing. Denzel Simmon had two touchdowns and an extra point. Raekwon Mobley and Chase Donnahoe excelled on defense. Tommy Coletti recovered an onside kick.

Quinn Dempsey completed a pass to Logan Giordano and kicked an onside kick. Christian Maffett, Hunter Goode, Kolbe Adsunger, Daniel Colon, Dannie Sanders, Tyler Poindexter, Jake Lindemann, Johnny Hughes, Gary Bell and Dyllyn Mullins played tough.

COCONUT CREEK

Justin Forde rushed for 186 yards and three touchdowns as the Coconut Creek Eagles Pee Wees defeated the Weston Warriors 20-12 in the American Youth Football League.

Giovanni Bovenzi and Xavier Padgett also ran well. Jorge Zambrano kicked a 2-pointer. Gavin Bulloss led the defense with eight tackles and a 40-yard fumble return.

Forde and Padgett had four tackles apiece. Christian Paillet made three tackles. David Daniels, Anthony Cerasani, James Bullard, Jesus Cornelio, Travon Octelus, Alex Rodriguezand Bovenzi each had two tackles. Victor Trujillo, Bobby McLaughlin, Conner Smith and Zack Fischer added tackles.

100: WESTON 34, COCONUT CREEK 0: For the Eagles, Michael Carrion Jr. and Brandon Halas each ran for 35 yards. Javarri Harris, Marc Antione Hardoman and JC Woods also ran hard.
