Pickett, Stocker help second year West Broward win first district title

In just its second year, the top seed West Broward High School girls' varsity volleyball team won the District 12-6A championship on Wednesday by defeating host Cypress Bay 25-14, 25-20, 25-19.

West Broward, which went 16-4 in its debut with no seniors last season, improved to 16-4 again, but this time the Bobcats are a year older, a year wiser and a district champ. Balanced play with many contributing anchored the historic win.

Jaclyn Pickett had 17 service points (five aces), five digs and four kills (two blocks). Taylor Bonito recorded 16 assists, four service points, six digs and six kills (two blocks). Michelle Stocker had four kills (two blocks), four digs and four service points.

Freshman Emily Navarrete had nine digs. Ashley Navarrete had five kills, four digs, two service points. Senior Kathryn Maher added four kills, eight service points, nine digs and eight assists. Amanda Jacob had three blocks, four kills, four digs and two service points. Sineidy Cruz had two service points and a dig.

West Broward and Cypress Bay advance to the region quarterfinals on Nov. 4. West Broward hosts Plantation, and the Lightning travel to Hollywood Hills.
