Douglas wins public bragging rights

Drigo, Strode help anchor solid defense

In a battle of the top two Broward County public school volleyball programs, the visiting Douglas High School varsity girls' volleyball team defeated Pompano 25-21, 28-26, 20-25, 25-22 on Thursday night.

Freshman Kirsten Kuhl had 14 kills and four digs. Sophomore Brittany Sauls had 16 digs, four service points and three kills, and senior Kendall Putnam had 23 digs and six service points for the Eagles.

Both teams are preparing for the district playoffs which begin next week. Douglas is hosting District 10-6A, and Pompano is doing the same in District 14-3A.

``Playing Pompano Beach is excellent preparation for the playoffs,'' Douglas coach Dean Barboza said in an e-mail. ``They have talented outside hitters and a few good defensive players in addition to strong serving. We had to work to score.''

The Douglas defense was good especially Mackenzie Drigo and Lauren Strode. They had many digs and passed well.

Douglas also has wins over Calvary Christian, Coral Springs and West Broward. Pompano defeated Coral Springs, Nova and Pine Crest.
