The high school district girls' varsity volleyball playoffs are next week in Broward County, and one very interesting semifinal matchup will send a good team home on Wednesday.
The two finalists in each district advance to the region quarterfinals on Nov. 4. In District 14-3A, North Broward Prep, Pine Crest and Pompano each had one loss in the district standings.
In the regular season, Pine Crest beat North Broward Prep in three games. Pompano beat Pine Crest in three games, and North Broward Prep beat Pompano in four games. Pompano received the top seed by virtue of a third tiebreaker (most away district wins). The Tornadoes had two, and NBP and Pine Crest each had one.
So the Tornadoes should reach the district final and qualify for the region quarterfinals. North Broward Prep faces Pine Crest in a district semifinal, meaning one will make the district finals and region quarterfinal while the other's season will end.
There is a rivalry between North Broward Prep and Pine Crest, and last season North Broward Prep eliminated Pine Crest in regionals on a controversial call reversal.
Second seed Nova is poised to make its first region appearance by emerging from District 16-5A as the runner-up to St. Thomas Aquinas.
The Raiders, Broward's best team, have a very tough road to the state title with teams like Martin County, Tallahassee Leon and Venice in Class 5A. St. Thomas beat Venice but dropped matches to Martin County and Leon.
Class 4A Fort Myers took St. Thomas Aquinas to five games with the Raiders prevailing. St. Thomas Aquinas beat Class 4A Cardinal Gibbons in four games. Defending Class 3A state champ Lake Highland Prep beat Gibbons two games to one, and Fort Myers beat Lake Highland Prep in three games.
District top seeds are Cardinal Gibbons, Chaminade-Madonna, Douglas, Highlands Christian, Hollywood Hills, Pompano, St. Thomas Aquinas, West Broward and Westminster Academy.
Archbishop McCarthy, Calvary Christian, Coral Springs, Cypress Bay, Plantation, Pine Crest and Sheridan Hills are district two seeds.
Three seeds include Cooper City, Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale Christian, North Broward Prep, Northeast, Sagemont and South Broward.
Nov. 4: Region Quarterfinals. Nov. 10: Region Semifinals. Nov. 14: Region Finals. Nov. 18-21: State Final Four at The Lakeland Center.
