Grizzle leads Highlands Christian in digs
A libero, Lexie Grizzle is a senior captain, guiding the skilled Highlands Christian School girls' varsity volleyball team.
This is her third season on the varsity team. A defensive standout, she tops the team in digs. She has played volleyball since sixth grade.
Grizzle also has been involved in club ball, playing with Gold Coast Volleyball for two years and the Ocean Breeze Volleyball Club one year. She also plays soccer and softball and has maintained an A average.
Kelley Ray, a middle hitter, is also a senior captain. She leads the team in kills and blocks. Ray has also played volleyball since sixth grade with two years' varsity experience. She has maintained a B average and also plays basketball and softball.
Ray had 28 kills, six blocks in wins over Florida Bible and Boca Raton-St. Andrew's.
Sophomore setter Shelby Rush is in her second year on the Highlands varsity team. She had 23 service points, eight aces, three kills, 37 assists, 20 digs against West Palm Beach-King's Academy, David Posnack Hebrew Day School and Westminster Academy.
Rush played with the Boomers Volleyball Club the past four years. Her club team placed fifth in the Junior Olympic Club Division in the summer.
Highlands Christian is 10-4. Their setbacks are to Summit Christian in three, King's Academy in three and Westminster Academy twice (four and three games).
The Knights defeated Boca Raton-St. Andrew's in a five-game classic 19-25, 31-29, 19-25, 25-15, 15-7. They also handed Sheridan Hills its only setback. Other victories were against Upperroom Christian, Hollywood Christian, Zion Lutheran, Fort Lauderdale Christian, Sagemont, Florida Bible and David Posnack Hebrew Day School.
COOPER CITY
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the Cooper City High School girls' volleyball program is dedicating its home match against Miramar on Wednesday to those who are battling or have died from the disease.
The Cooper City players will be wearing pink socks and pink ribbons. The team wants everyone to wear pink.
JUNIOR VARSITY
CARDINAL GIBBONS TOURNAMENT
The Cardinal Gibbons junior varsity volleyball team defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 25-10, 25-15 to win the Lady Chiefs JV Tournament on Saturday at Cardinal Gibbons in Fort Lauderdale.
Sophomore Clarissa Ter Maat had 11 kills and eight digs. Sophomore Allyson White had 20 assists, and sophomore Lexi Burton had 11 digs. Sophomore Sara Jacobs added 11 service points and five aces. Gibbons avenged an earlier defeat to the Raiders.
The champs are Lexi Boulukos, Megan Brady, Lexi Burton, Nicole Cueli, Lindsay Griffin, Sara Jacobs, Melissa MacDonald, Carolyn Martin, Caitlin Nestor, Bella Sanasardo, Kara Schwantes, Taylor Selbach, Clarissa Ter Maat, Blaire Wahrman and Allyson White.
The Chiefs beat Hollywood Hills, Northeast and Nova en route to the finals. St. Thomas defeated Archbishop McCarthy, Boca Raton-Olympic Heights and Pompano to reach the title match.
Playing without its libero Nicole Peterson, who played in the Tampa tournament with the varsity team, the JV Raiders included Juanita Pedraza, Ana Pedraza, Emily Smith, Morgan Latour, Elise Babey, Stephanie Arneson, Ashley Posada, Kelly Bartolomew, Jordan Wiesler, Alex Costello, Nicole Lescano, Jackie Edge, Gina Gonzalez, Brooke Lyons and Dana Barocas.
Olympic Heights edged Nova 25-20, 18-25, 15-8 for third place. The Titans are Gabby Bailey, Gianna Caputo, Tonya Checchi, Paige Dibiano, Shannon Lawson, Chantelle Malclom, Sabrina Morris, Natalie Nascrimentio, Bianca Perdomo, Elizabeth Perez, Jenny Robbins, Monica Rodrigues, Maria Salas and Kali Davis-White.
