Arenal sets table for young Pompano team

Sophomore Alexis Arenal did a good job setting, and the Pompano High School girls' varsity volleyball team won a big match, defeating visiting Nova 25-19, 25-21, 27-29, 25-21 on Tuesday night.

Arenal, who had 12 points and two aces, totaled 27 assists, distributing the ball nicely, especially to 5-9 Stephanie Pellitteri and 5-11 Peyton Schlosser. Pellitteri was also outstanding on serve reception and overall defense.

Schlosser, another sophomore, had 17 kills, two blocks, nine points and three aces for the Tornadoes (8-5). Pellitteri, a junior who overcame a virus, had 15 kills, 16 points and three aces. Senior 6-0 middle hitter Lauren Gillespie added nine kills, three blocks, a tip and a point. Senior 6-2 middle hitter Raneisha Lamar had three kills, one block and three points.

Amanda Shawver, a junior, had six points and three kills. Sophomore Carliegh Calhoun had three kills. Kelsey Cortina, another sophomore, had two points and an ace. Senior Sade Barnswell had a point and played well defensively.

For Nova (9-3), junior lefty Cassie Thompson had 10 kills, one tip and 10 points, and senior Kori Roberts had eight kills and five blocks. Sanna Nagi, a junior, had seven kills, eight points and three aces. Sophomore setter Christy Brinson totaled 15 assists, one kill off a tip and two points.

Senior 5-10 hitter Paola Arguelles had seven kills and three blocks. Sara Saxner, a senior, had five kills, one on a tip, and seven points with good defense. Kayla Upham, a junior, added two kills, four points and two aces. Sarah Gonzalez, another junior, had nine points and an ace.

In game four, Schlosser had seven kills including the match clincher off a set from Arenal. Pellitteri added four kills, one on a tip, and two points, and Gillespie had three kills, one off a block. Arenal had four points. Calhoun added two big kills, and Lamar a huge block for a kill.

For the Titans, Roberts, Saxner and Thompson each had three kills, but it was the defense that kept them in the match, denying several match points in game three and four. In the third game, Nova showed its grit, down 2-0 in games, by winning a stellar battle 29-27.

Nagi had four kills including the game winner, but Thompson recorded five kills with two at crucial moments to prevent defeat. Roberts had two kills off blocks.

In the opener, Pellitteri had five kills, three points and two aces, and Schlosser recorded four kills, one on a block, five points and two aces. Gillespie had two kills, one off a block. Roberts had three kills, two on blocks, and Gonzalez had four points for Nova.

In game two, Pellitteri and Schlosser each had four kills, one on a block, three points and an ace. Schlosser's ace ended game two. Lamar had two kills and three points. Nova junior Jennifer Dodd had two kills as did teammates Arguelles and Saxner.

Pompano is in a tough district with North Broward Prep and Pine Crest.
