Dunn, McMurtrey guide Westminster rise with new coach

Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale is having a really good season in girls' varsity volleyball. The Lions are one of the top teams in South Florida.

Westminster's new coach Katie (Ralph) McCrath is in a very nice situation making her high school volleyball coaching debut with a very good group.

She helped coach at Barry University in Miami Shores and ran clinics for the prestigious Boomers Volleyball Club.

``I'm definitely enjoying coaching high school volleyball,'' McCrath said. ``We have girls who want to work hard.''

It helps when you have outstanding talent who works hard.

Sophomore outside hitter Leigh Andrew took Miami Herald All-Broward Player of the Year honors (3A-1A) as a freshman. Sophomore outside hitter Amelia Bohlander stands 6-0, and junior Mckenzie Keightley is 6-2, giving the Lions a formidable front court. Junior Emily McMurtrey is a skilled setter who can hit. Senior Jenny Walsh and junior Tori Wann are solid defensively, and seniors Megan Dunn and Brenna Pelletier provide leadership.

The Lions beat Pine Crest, and the Panthers are always tough. McMurtrey had 15 points, three aces, 13 kills, 49 assists and 20 digs. Dunn had nine points, two aces, 21 assists and 11 digs. Andrew had 17 points, six aces, 34 kills, one block and 39 digs. Keightley had 24 kills and three blocks. Bohlander had 25 points, seven aces, 25 kills, one block and seven digs. Walsh had 28 points and 42 digs.

At the impressive Martin County Tournament, the Lions were third. In several matches against quality teams, McMurtrey had 26 points, 14 aces, 27 kills, two blocks, 110 assists and 49 digs. Dunn had 47 points, 16 aces, 87 assists and 29 digs. Andrew had 34 points, 16 aces, 81 kills, six blocks and 94 digs. Keightley had 41 kills and seven blocks. Bohlander had 38 points, 13 aces, 49 kills, nine blocks, an assist and seven digs. Walsh had 37 points, 12 aces and 87 digs. Pelletier had eight points, six aces and five digs.

McCrath played one season at NCAA Division I East Tennessee State in the Atlantic Sun Conference and three seasons at Division II Seattle Pacific University. She coached club volleyball in Seattle. She married Barry University men's soccer coach Steve McCrath in June.

The Everglades High School girls' varsity volleyball team defeated Miramar 25-16, 25-18, 25-22. Alex Miles and Morgan Turner led the Gators to their second win.
