Herald, Marlins honor student-athletes

Florida Marlins first baseman Gaby Sanchez helped honor the final group of recipients for the 2009 Miami Herald Neighbors/Florida Marlins Academic Honor before the Marlins/Nationals game at Land Shark Stadium in Miami Gardens.

The recipients are Dylan Fineberg (Sagemont School/Cooper City Optimist), Michael Machulda (Pioneer Middle School/Cooper City Optimist), Marissa Manley (Virginia A. Boone Highland Oaks Elementary School/North Miami Beach Little League), Nicholas Miranda (Gladeview Christian School/Tamiami Park) and Jordan Ray (Pines Middle School/Pembroke Pines Optimist).

The recipients were recognized on the field with Billy the Marlin by their side.

They received an autographed card signed by Sanchez and a certificate for their sportsmanship and solid work in the classroom.

BASEBALL/SOFTBALL

WALL

Weston Area Little League is opening online registration Oct. 15. Boys and girls, age 5-18, for baseball. Girls, age 5-16, for softball.

Prices vary by age. Evaluations are in December, and games start in February. Visit wallbaseball.org.

FLAG FOOTBALL

COOPER CITY

Daniel Conde threw two touchdown passes, caught a touchdown pass and ran for a touchdown as the Tigers edged the Raiders 32-27 in Intermediate of Cooper City Optimist flag football.

Landon Counts provided stellar defense with six stops, including three key sacks. Miguel Castillo caught two touchdown passes and defended a fourth-down pass. Jenna Antieau had a 40-yard reception. Anthony Dellapietra had a touchdown pass and a touchdown run.

He also made an interception to seal the win.

RAZORS 48, GIANTS 6: Joe Lovins had more than 200 yards catching and running with three touchdowns and an interception for a touchdown.

Tyler Willis ran and passed for more than 150 yards with three touchdowns. Liam Amberson had a 20-yard touchdown run.

Defense dominated with interceptions by Isaac Weiser, Brandon Pretty and Cody Croye. There were outstanding performances by Dylan Tangusso, Matthew Skelton, Jared Provost, Harrison Gottlieb and Frankie and Alejandro Baquedano.

ROOKIE: GIANTS 38, HURRICANES 6: Team captain Cristian Moreno was outstanding with an interception, a 25-yard touchdown run and five flag pulls. Jacob Berger had a 20-yard touchdown run and an extra point.

Dylan Fineberg had a 25-yard touchdown run, a safety and a 75-yard interception return.

Justin Fisher had an extra-point pass and an extra-point catch. Michaelangelo Liquori ran for 35 yards and provided a solid pass rush.

Logan Miller had a flag pull and 20 yards rushing. Travis Norton gained 20 yards rushing. Lenny Ricca had a 50-yard touchdown run, an extra-point pass and an extra-point catch. David Romero had 15 yards rushing.

Zachary Shulby scored on a 55-yard triple reverse and gained 15 yards receiving. Elijah Wyche had 25 yards on the ground and grabbed three flags.

For the Hurricanes, Justin Ryan, Austin Engeler and Deryk Sloatman did a good job on defense. Brandon Otis, Jordon Lebron, Steve Sullivan and Matt Brooks worked hard blocking. Bryce Cort and Brendon OMalley played admirably on offense.

There was solid team play from Cero Deland.

SENIOR: HURRICANES 28, TEAM NO. 2 7: Nick Rodriguez had two rushing touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass. Michael Bargione tossed a touchdown pass to Leiha Cardona. Eric Zimbelmann ran for a touchdown. Eric Soloman and Mia Aldrich caught extra-point passes, and Joe Wassell intercepted two passes.
