Pembroke Pines Bengals defeat All Sports Academy to win tourney
The Pembroke Pines Optimist Bengals 8-and-under baseball team won the USSSA Kendall Craze VII Tournament in Homestead.
The Bengals beat All Sports Academy 9-4 in the finals. Starter Kevin Barreneche allowed two runs and struck out two in three innings. He also went 1 for 1 with three walks and scored three times.
Anthony Nunez was 2 for 2, scored twice and did an outstanding job at catcher. Luis Tuero went 2 for 3, scored twice, drove in three and played superbly at shortstop. Idair Garcia had a double, a run and an RBI.
Edgar Quintana finished the final three innings allowing one run. Quintana also had a double with two RBI. Jordan Naranjo scored. Ivan Herrera, Johnny Rodriguez, Christian Vargas and Jaylen Camacho were solid on defense.
In their past four tournaments, the Bengals won three.
The Pembroke Pines Optimist Bengals 12-and-under baseball team won the Cal Ripken Tidal Wave Tournament in South Carolina.
The weeklong tournament started with some team challenges that included a Turn 2 Challenge and Home Run Derby. The Bengals missed first place in the Turn 2 Challenge by only a three-hundredth of second, a quick infield led by Ethan Cypress. In the Home Run Derby, Jawuan Harris hit seven home runs over the fence.
The Bengals beat the NYO Titans from Atlanta. Walter Jackson had a two-run double and made a diving stop at first base. Devin Moronta pitched the final out.
In the championship game, the Bengals beat the WHC Renegades of Maryland 6-3. Ethan Cypress was named the MVP, producing multiple hits and RBI.
Other outstanding players included Dwayne Smith, Tyler Sabine, Jawuan Harris, Edwin Pichardo, Newton Vargas, Alec Kushner, Walter Jackson, Tre Donastorg, Devin Moronta, Rocco Marucci and Chris Lugo. They were coached by Walter Jackson, Maurice Harris, Tony Donastorg, team manager Meredith Morris and team mom April Bourassa.
SOFTBALL
DAVIE
The Davie Broncos girls' fast-pitch 12U softball team won the Independent Softball Association B Division state tournament with a 5-0 record.
The girls averaged .319 at the plate and scored 7.8 runs a game. The starting pitchers averaged a 2.07 ERA.
In the championship game, the Broncos beat the Lutz Lightning 11-4. Gwen Svekis hit a two-run home run and went 4 for 4. Chastity Velez went 3 for 4 and played good defense at first base. Sarah Maloney pitched seven innings, shutting out the Lightning over the final four innings.
The Broncos finished 39-14-4. They are coached by Kevin Asher, Steve Collins, Mike Cunningham and Rich Russo.

MIRAMAR
The Miramar Optimist Track Club performed well at the 2009 AAU Club National Championship Meet held at Disney Wide World of Sports in Orlando. Thirty athletes competed and won 12 gold, six silver, 13 bronze and 10 copper medals.

Aryana Golson, gold in Primary Girls 200-meter dash. Michele Bigby, gold in Primary Girls 800-meter run; silver in Primary Girls 400-meter dash.
Taylah Brown, silver in Primary Girls 800-meter run; fifth in Primary Girls 400-meter dash. Regine Williams, bronze in 100-meter dash; bronze in 200; silver in long jump.
Allison Richmond, seventh in Intermediate Girls 100-meter dash; fifth in 200-meter dash; third in 400.
Amber Hopkins, sixth in Midget Girls 200-meter dash. Xori Green, sixth in Bantam Girls Triathlon.
