Ring report

Former WWE star The Promise Antonio Thomas is literally combining brains with brawn. Thomas, one half of the former Heart Throbs, is the latest professional wrestler to donate his brain to concussion research.

The Sports Legacy Institute, founded by former WWE wrestler Chris Nowinski and Dr. Robert Cantu, is the recipient of Thomas's donation, part of an effort to further understand concussions and their effect on the brain.

The SLI, founded in 2008, is dedicated to advancing the health and wellness of athletes and improving the safety of sports and other athletic endeavors.

``It's the least I can do to help other wrestlers and athletes after me,'' Thomas said in a release.

Former NHL star Keith Primeau, whose career was cut short because of multiple concussions, is among the pro athletes who've pledged to donate their brains after death.

The Promise Antonio Thomas will appear at the New England Championship Wrestling Tag Team Classic on Saturday, Sept. 19 in Quincy, Mass.

``The fans will have to wait and see what I have in store, and I'll have to wait to see their reaction,'' he said. `It's going to be awesome.''

In the world of pro wrestling, TNA star Samoa Joe is known for his stiff and hard-hitting style. A former TNA and ROH champ, Joe is held in high regard within the industry, respected by wrestlers and fans.

Joe knows the rigors of sports entertainment can have on a wrestler's body and has decided to give back by assisting Wrestlers Rescue with the Dr. Death Campaign.

Joe has graciously donated a shadowbox frame containing the pair of white kick pads (signed and dated) and wrap worn on March 22, 2003, when he won the ROH title in Philadelphia.

Beginning at 5 p.m. EST on Friday, Sept. 18, Wrestlers Rescue is holding an auction with the opening bid at $149.99, plus S&H, for this one-of-a-kind item. The funds raised will help Dr. Death Steve Williams, with his health care costs as he fights cancer cells in his stoma. Visit wrestlersrescue.org.
