Cilic, Melzer reach semis in Vienna

The Sports Network

Top-seeded Croat Marin Cilic and seventh-seeded Austrian crowd favorite Jurgen Melzer secured berths in Saturday's semifinals at the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy.

Cilic dismissed 2004 Vienna titlist Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 6-4, while Melzer upset second-seeded Czech Radek Stepanek 6-2, 6-2 on the indoor hardcourts at Wiener Stadthalle.

Another quarterfinal upset came when tough Serb Janko Tipsarevic tripped up third-seeded 2008 Vienna runner-up Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 6-3. The French Monfils was upset by German Philipp Petzschner in last year's finale here.

One other round-of-eight affair saw fourth-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber handle fifth-seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 7-5, 6-4.

The semifinals will pit Cilic against Kohlschreiber and Melzer versus Tipsarevic.
