Fifth-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova highlighted Monday's opening-round winners at the $1 million Kremlin Cup.
The 2006 Moscow runner-up Petrova pasted Russian wild card Yana Buchina 6-2, 6-0 on the indoor courts at Olympic Stadium. An upset came when Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez ousted seventh-seeded Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 6-2.
Additional Day-1 wins came for Belarusian Olga Govortsova, Czech Lucie Safarova and Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko, who topped former top-10 Russian star Anna Chakvetadze 6-4, 6-3. Chakvetadze defeated Petrova in the final here three years ago.
This week's top seeds, Russian Vera Zvonareva and Serbian Jelena Jankovic, will both take to the courts on Tuesday. Last year's Moscow runner-up Zvonareva will be opposed by Romanian Ioana Raluca Olaru, while the reigning champion Jankovic will take on Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova. Jankovic beat Zvonareva in last year's finale.
This week's winner will claim $157,427.
