Pennetta advances in first round at Connecticut

New Haven, CT ( - Flavia Pennetta was an easy first round winner Sunday at the Connecticut Open tennis event, a final U.S. Open tune-up.

The sixth-seeded Pennetta from Italy was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic on the hardcourts at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.

American Alison Riske was a straight-set winner over Casey Dellacqua of Australia, 6-1, 6-4, while Italian Camila Giorgi took down American Coco Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-1.

Russian Ekaterina Makarova defeated Italian Roberta Vinci in identical 6-3, 6-3 sets.

Romanian Simona Halep beat 2012 titlist Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in last year's final.
