Cornet, Hercog ousted in Bastad

Bastad, Sweden ( - Top seed Alize Cornet of France and former champion Polona Hercog of Slovenia were eliminated in first-round play Tuesday at the Swedish Open.

Estonian qualifier Anett Kontaveit pulled off the upset of Cornet with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 triumph, while Germany's Dinah Pfizenmaier downed the eighth-seeded Hercog 7-5, 7-6 (7-5). Hercog won back-to-back Bastad titles in 2011 and '12.

Two other seeded players were bounced Tuesday, one day after second-seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was also ousted.

German qualifier Laura Siegemund toppled fourth-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan, 7-5, 6-3, while Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over fifth-seeded Anna Schmiedlova of Slovakia.

Sixth-seeded Annika Beck avoided an early exit with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Poland's Katarzyna Piter.

Other winners Tuesday included Russian Alexandra Panova, Estonia's Kaia Kanepi and Kazakhstan qualifier Yulia Putintseva. Panova dumped Romania's Alexandra Cadantu in straight sets, while Kanepi went three sets to chase Swedish native Johanna Larsson and Putintseva held a 3-1 lead in the first set when Brazil's Teliana Pereira retired.

The highest remaining seeded player is No. 3 Camila Giorgi. The Italian will play her first-round match Wednesday against Canadian qualifier Gabriela Dabrowski.
