Former University of Miami right-hander Carlos Gutierrez was a surprise selection to play for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.
make a name for himself.
''Playing for Puerto Rico in the WBC is such an honor,'' said Gutierrez, 22, a member of the Minnesota Twins organization.
Gutierrez, who went to Miami Columbus and was the Twins' first-round pick in 2008, became the first player to represent Puerto Rico without playing in the Puerto Rican winter league. Gutierrez pitched a scoreless ninth inning Saturday against Panama in a 7-0 victory.
''We have guys on this pitching staff that have been in the big leagues for a while and know a lot about the game,'' said Gutierrez, who was 3-1 with a 2.10 ERA for Single A Fort Myers last season. ``If I don't get to pitch much, I can assure you I will not have come out empty-handed.''
PUDGE UPDATE
Former Marlins catcher Ivan Rodriguez, a free agent, said he is trying to tune out thoughts of the 2009 major-league season and devote his attention to Team Puerto Rico. But he said several clubs were in the hunt for his services, and that the Marlins are ''right there'' with two or three other teams.
''We have something going on with the Marlins, but I'm not too sure where we are right now,'' Rodriguez said.
He added that the Marlins -- he owns a home in Miami -- would be the best place for him to finish his major-league career.
''I still have great memories of my year with the Marlins. That was an amazing year,'' Rodriguez said.
In 2003, Rodriguez and the Marlins won the World Series. Rodriguez signed with Detroit as a free agent for the following season.
