Breaking down South Florida's high school football districts

The Florida High School Athletic Association released its completed district alignment for football for the 2009 and 2010 seasons Friday morning. Here is a look at the districts containing Miami-Dade and Broward County schools:

CLASS 6A

• District 9: Deerfield Beach; Douglas; Northeast (moved up from 5A); Taravella.

• District 10: Miramar; Piper; Plantation; South Plantation; Western.

• District 11: Cypress Bay, Everglades, Flanagan, West Broward (independent in 2008).

• District 12: American, Krop, Goleman, Carol City, North Miami, North Miami Beach.

• District 13: Hialeah, Hialeah-Miami Lakes, Miami Beach, Central, Northwestern, Miami Springs.

• District 14: Columbus, Coral Gables, Miami High, Coral Park, Reagan (moved up from 3A), South Miami.

• District 15: Braddock, Ferguson, Sunset, Southwest, Varela.

• District 16: Coral Reef, Homestead, Killian, Palmetto, Southridge, South Dade.

• Other notable teams: Orlando Boone, Sanford Seminole, Apopka, Orlando Dr. Phillips.

CLASS 5A

• District 14: Boyd Anderson (moved down from 6A), Dillard, Blanche Ely.

• District 15: Coconut Creek, Cooper City, Coral Glades, Coral Springs, Monarch.

• District 16: McArthur, Nova (moved up from 4A), St. Thomas Aquinas, South Broward.

• Other notable teams: Lakeland, Tampa Plant (moved up from 4A), Sarasota Riverview (moved down from 6A).

CLASS 4A

• District 16: West Palm Beach Forest Hill, Hollywood Hills (moved down from 5A), Stranahan (moved down from 5A).

• Other notable teams: Pensacola Pine Forest, Tallahassee Lincoln, Orlando Edgewater (moved down from 6A), Seffner Armwood, Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer.

CLASS 3A

• District 14: Archbishop McCarthy, Fort Lauderdale (moved down from 4A), Hallandale (moved down from 4A), Boca Raton Olympic Heights (moved down from 4A), Pembroke Pines Charter.

• District 15: Hialeah Gardens (first year), Jackson (moved down from 4A), Norland (moved down from 6A), Westland Hialeah (first year).

• District 16: Belen Jesuit, Key West, Mater Academy, Edison, Booker T. Washington (moved down from 4A).

• Other notable teams: Naples, Ponte Vedra Beach Nease (moved down from 4A), St. Augustine, Sarasota Booker.

CLASS 2A

• District 8: Plantation American Heritage, Cardinal Gibbons (moved down from 3A), Pompano Beach.

• Other notable teams: Tallahassee Godby (moved down from 3A), Frostproof (moved up from 2B), Bushnell South Sumter, Immokalee (moved down from 3A), Belle Glade Glades Central (moved down from 3A).

CLASS 2B

• District 7: West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman (moved down from 2A), Cocoa Beach (moved down from 3A), Coral Springs Charter (moved down from 2A), Riviera Beach Inlet Grove (moved down from 2A), North Broward Prep (moved down from 2A), Pahokee, Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest (independent in 2008), Boca Raton St. Andrew's (moved down from 2A), University.

• District 8: Archbishop Carroll (moved down from 2A), Chaminade (moved down from 2A), Coral Shores (independent in 2008), Doral Academy (moved down from 2A), Gulliver Prep (moved down from 2A), La Salle (moved down from 2A), Monsignor Pace (moved down from 3A), Ransom Everglades, Somerset Academy (independent in 2008).
