Though Pine Crest's boys and girls were dominant once again, Ashley Hicks, Patti Kranz and Jessie Nederlanden broke many of the Panthers' individual titles during the District 10-1A swimming championships Saturday at St. Andrew's School in Boca Raton.
Hicks, a junior at Coral Springs Charter who was runner-up at state last season, won the girls' 100-yard backstroke in 58.03 seconds.
''I want to go 56 and have been borderline 57,'' she said. ``I feel good that I will be able to do it.''
Kranz, a sophomore at Westminster Academy who is a defending state champ, won the girls' 1-meter diving title with 484.65 points.
''I felt really on [Saturday],'' she said. ``I just want to do my best and have fun, but it would be cool to win state again.''
Teammates Meghan Crimmins and Madison Kahler completed a Westminster Academy sweep (top three) in girls' diving, but Nederlanden was the most impressive Lions' competitor -- winning the 50 freestyle in 25.03, helping the 200 freestyle relay (Stacey Walkling, Alexandera Offerdahl and Caroline Israels) place second and set a school record in 1:41.48, nabbing third with the same girls in the 200 medley relay in 1:58.66, and taking fourth in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.77.
''Our goal all season was to break the school record in the relay so I was more excited about that,'' said Nederlanden, a newcomer to the 50 freestyle. ``After high school season last year, my coaches wanted me to try the 50 free for club swimming. My coaches thought I could win it [Saturday], but I wasn't expecting to win it.''
Pompano Beach junior Noah Garcia, who was runner-up at state last season, overcame a slight injury to his left ankle at practice earlier in the week to successfully defend the boys' 1-meter district diving title with 572.80 points.
Pine Crest won the boys' and girls' team titles with winners in 16 of 24 events and other top placings. Robert Dowd (100 butterfly, 100 backstroke), Stephanie Eisenring (200 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Nicholas Manousos (200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke) and Lindsay Orchard (200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke) were double winners.
Elijah Flood (200 freestyle), Jessica Kazmin (100 butterfly), Siena DeVenuto (500 freestyle) and Thomas Veale (500 freestyle) captured individual titles. The Panthers' boys are improving from last year's efforts.
''Last year, we had six guys go to state,'' said senior Stephano Miranda, who was second in the 200 and 500 freestyle. 'This year there is more emphasis on team, and `Team First' is our team motto. We want to get 7-10 guys to state.''
Pine Crest will find out next week who goes to state during the region finals at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex. The winners of each event from each district qualify for regionals along with the Top 20 times -- of the remaining finalists in each event -- from the four districts.
