ROUNDUP

Smith powers Archbishop Carroll past Dade Christian

dquinones@MiamiHerald.com

Rodney Smith caught three touchdowns, quarterback Chance Mack did not throw an incompletion and Archbishop Carroll defeated district foe Dade Christian 46-13 on Wednesday.

''The score kind of surprised me,'' Carroll coach Jorge Zagales said. ``They were big and tough, and I was worried coming off last week's game [against Gulliver].''

Mack led the offensive attack, going 5 for 5 for 114 yards.

Archbishop Carroll (7-1, 3-0) wrapped up its third consecutive district championship last week against Gulliver, and on Wednesday the Bulldogs wasted no time dispatching Dade Christian (6-2, 1-2), going up 34-0 at the half.

In the second half, Dade Christian scored two touchdowns to narrow the Bulldogs' lead to 21. But defensive end Shawn Leslie intercepted a batted pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown, draining the team's momentum.

''That's the whole purpose of this schedule we play,'' Zagales said. ``We've improved every week, we're better than we were even six weeks ago. As far as we're concerned, a team can improve greatly in six weeks.''

The only loss for the Bulldogs came at the hands of powerhouse Jacksonville Bolles on Sept. 5. Since then, the senior-heavy team has made a habit of beating district rivals, dispatching Doral Academy 63-21 and Gulliver 21-19.
