Mariana Lucena finally has a major invitational title and All-American rank to call her own. The Cypress Bay senior, who ran in the shadow of former star teammate Emilie Amaro the past two seasons, broke through by winning the girls' race at the Walt Disney World Cross-Country Classic in a career-best 18:20 on Saturday.
That new time, which moves Lucena up to No. 10 in Florida, earned her All-American honors on the Milesplit rankings and helped the Lightning finish fourth overall. ''A great win for Mariana in the Invitational, another personal best,'' Lightning coach Joe Monks said. ``She is on fire right now. She is doing real well.''
Cypress Bay's other No. 1 runner, Kevin Bonilla, also left his mark in Lake Buena Vista, clocking a career-best 16:28 to finish runner-up in the boys' Invitational.
In the large school boys' race, South Plantation's Ryan Toledo took sixth in 16:54.
