Heritage's Boynton Jr. to headline fall basketball league

flyon@MiamiHerald.com

No matter when or where American Heritage's nationally-ranked guard Kenny Boynton Jr. plays, a capacity crowd is sure to follow. Boynton's ability to score at a prolific clip while keeping an even-keel approach to stardom has endeared him to a growing legion of fans.

The 6-2 senior, ranked No. 7 in his class by Rivals.com, is expected to draw another huge crowd when he competes in the Tournament of Champions, Inc., Fall league at Miami Norland High School on Saturday.

Performing on the big stage, said Boynton, who has standing offers from Duke, Florida and USC, Georgia Tech, among others, brings out his best.

''I look forward to the big show,'' said Boynton, who averaged a state-best 34.5 points as a Parade All-American a year ago. ``I always want to put on a bigger performance so I could give fans their money's worth and they could come back to watch me.''

Under fall league rules, teams are entered under their school's city. As such, Boynton and his Heritage teammates will represent Plantation against Richmond Heights (Coral Reef) and rising 6-4 junior guard Charles Hankerson at 4, followed by City of Miramar at 8 p.m.

Trying to slow Boynton and backcourt mate Ray Taylor will be a challenge for City of Miramar, which knocked off Fort Lauderdale (Dillard), the reigning 5A state champions, on Thursday.

Other intriguing first-day matchups include Aventura (Krop) against Miami Lakes (Hialeah Miami Lakes) and its huge front line; Overtown (Choice Academy) against Martavious Irving and Bryan Bynes-led Lauderdale Lakes (Boyd Anderson), a 2007-08 Class 6A state finalist.

Opa-locka (Pace), the defending 4A champions, withdrew from the Tournament and was replaced by Pembroke Pines (Flanagan). That should give Khyle Marshall, a high-flying 6-6 forward, a chance to excel. Last year, Marshall averaged 24.5 points and 12.5 rebounds and was named to the 6A All-State first team.

The top eight teams advance to the playoffs on Sunday, which start at 9 a.m. and conclude with the championship game at 4. Admission is $5 for adults each day. Children under 12 pay $3 for one day and $5 for the weekend pass.
