ROUNDUP

Pines Charter's Davis running hot

flyon@MiamiHerald.com

Cross-country runner Ryan Davis of Pembroke Pines Charter continued his climb up the state rankings with a personal-best 16:21 at the Puma-Fleet Invitational at South Fork High School on Saturday morning.

Davis' new mark, which brought a seventh-place finish, bumped him up to No. 15 in the flrunners.com poll a week before the senior competes against an elite field at the flrunners.com Invitational 9 in Titusville.

''I'm looking forward to pushing it against next week,'' said Davis, who has dropped his time twice since winning the season-opener in 16:51. ``There are going to be a lot of good teams like Belen Jesuit there. I am looking to take down people that are ranked higher.''

Don't bet against Davis, who was a relative unknown at the start of his junior season but ultimately became the first Jaguars' cross-country runner to earn All-Broward first-team honors.

''I'm psyched,'' Davis said. ``I'm really looking [for a personal record] again next week. I felt great [Saturday].

``I planned it out perfectly, and I'm looking to do the same next week.''

Broward's top girls' finish came from Coral Springs senior Sarah Benckenstein, who placed 49th in 22:13.
