Westminster Christian's Nicole Carpio said she didn't go full speed Thursday afternoon at Larry and Penny Thompson Park.

She could have fooled those in attendance who watched her finish over half a minute ahead of the competition to win the girls' individual championship of the inaugural Run For the Stars Invitational. Carpio, a two-time Miami Herald Runner of the Year, ran a 18:32.00 to finish ahead of Cypress Bay's Mariana Lucena, who came in at 19:11.35.

''The first part I didn't even run fast,'' Carpio said. ``I don't think I even kicked it in gear the whole race. I know I can do better. I need to work harder.''

Carpio, a freshman, transferred back to Westminster at the end of last school year after running for the Warriors as a seventh-grader.

At the state Class 2A meet last year, she finished fourth. Running for Westminster Christian again, she is competing in Class 1A.

Dade did not win any team titles at the event. Pine Crest, led by junior and individual champion Chris Baker, won the boys' competition. Cypress Bay won the girls' title. Gulliver's girls, led by fourth-place finisher Carrie Davis, finished third -- the highest by a Dade team.

On the boys' side, Palmer Trinity's Mark Allen finished second to Baker with a time of 17:10.84, and helped the Falcons finish third.
