Running back Jerron Seymour did his best Friday night to act like this was just another week for Hialeah.
But Hialeah's fans and second-year coach Marc Berman knew different after a 34-6 victory over visiting Miami Springs. The victory allowed Hialeah to reclaim the Mayor's Cup in front of a packed crowd at Ted Hendricks Stadium.
''Our kids have got a lot of confidence right now being 2-0,'' Berman said. ``We've worked real hard in practice, and this week the kids gave it their all for this game and the rivalry.''
Hialeah was efficient on both sides of the ball. It totaled 292 yards on offense and held Miami Springs (1-1) to 20 rushing yards.
Seymour, a sophomore, led the offensive surge with 196 rushing yards on 15 carries and four touchdowns.
''I felt like this was my breakout game,'' he said. ``I always tell my line that I can only perform as well as they do, and [Friday night] they were great.''
Raheem Jackson added 40 rushing yards on seven carries and Troy Laster had 38 yards on eight carries.
''Each game, we try to stay pretty balanced offensively,'' Berman said. ``We have confidence in both the pass and the run, and I like to think our running backs give us the freedom to do a lot with the offensive game.''
American Heritage 42, Bay Point 6: Taking advantage of great field position all game, American Heritage easily handled a speedy Bay Point team at Heritage Field.
For American Heritage, which is ranked 18th in South Florida by The Miami Herald, this was a tuneup for next week's showdown at Jacksonville-Bolles.
''I was happy we won the game, but we have a lot to work on,'' American Heritage coach Byron Walker Jr said. ``We got a good look at a fast team . . . which was good for us, but I'd like to see us be able to throw and catch the ball better and execute better overall.''
American Heritage's first possession started at Bay Point's 26-yard line after a blocked punt. Rishard Anderson capped a seven-play drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. David Lopez's extra point was good for a 7-0 lead.
American Heritage was threatening to score again on its next possession, but quarterback Ryan Williams was sacked, and he fumbled at the 12-yard line. Bay Point linebacker Darius Downs picked up the ball and ran 88 yards untouched for a touchdown with 3:55 left in the first quarter. The two-point try failed, keeping American Heritage in front 7-6.
American Heritage took control in the second quarter, getting three touchdowns as part of a run of 35 unanswered points.
Running back Brent Singleton started the surge with a 4-yard touchdown run. On Bay Point's next possession, linebacker Michael Lopez picked up a fumble off a bad snap and raced 15 yards into the end zone to give American Heritage a 21-7 lead.
On American Heritage's next possession, Singleton scored on another 4-yard run to make it 28-6 with 1:11 remaining in the half.
American Heritage got two more touchdowns in the second half. Williams found receiver Brandon Nudelman wide open on a bootleg for a 17-yard touchdown, and Justin Goldberg scored on a 23-yard run.
Singleton had 98 rushing yards and Goldberg 70 for American Heritage.
American Heritage held Bay Point's offense to 69 total yards.
