American's Bivins hurt

Wide receiver Antonio Bivins sustained a neck injury late in the third quarter of a high school football game between American and Coral Reef at Harris Field in Homestead on Saturday night.

Bivins, who was hit as he ran his route during a play, layed motionless on the field for about 30 minutes, although at one point some movement on his legs was noticed.

As paramedics attended to Bivins, they put a neck brace on him before removing him from the field on a stretcher.

Shortly after being removed from the field, Bivins was airlifted to Jackson Memorial's Ryder Trauma Center. A hospital source said Bivins is listed in stable condition, and he was expected to stay overnight for further testing.

• Coral Reef 30, American 24: Coming off a 1-9 season with a new coaching staff, Coral Reef already matched its 2007 win total.

The defensive knack for the timely stop, along with special teams accounted for coach Shevas Clemens' successful debut, avenging last year's 34-14 loss to the Patriots.

''I knew they would take us lightly so I told the guys to fight hard for 48 minutes,'' Clemens said. ``They have been working since January and it was just a matter of them believing they could win.''

The Barracudas built a 30-10 lead midway through the third quarter on a 27-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Llaca to Phillip Hopper.

The Patriots rallied to score two touchdowns, the last score coming with 8:38 remaining in the fourth quarter on a Teprard Austin 8-yard run to close the gap to six.

The Coral Reef defense made two clutch stops in the closing minutes with Charles Sawyer intercepting a fourth-down pass with 3:18 remaining in the game.

American had one last chance in the final minute, but the series ended with four incompletions at midfield with 32 seconds left.

• Coral Gables 20, Sunset 19: The Coral Gables defensive line held up when it counted the most as it stopped Sunset's 2-point try with one minute left in the game to preserve a 20-19 win at Tropical Park.

With the score tied at 13, Coral Gables took the lead when Patrick McCain found Anthony Lee on a 15-yard touchdown grab with three minutes remaining.

Sunset then marched down the field and scored on Carlos Campos' second touchdown of the game with one minute left.

Campos finished with 120 yards on 18 carries.

Sunset got off to a good start when Steven Fonticella hooked up with Dustin Goffan on a 70-yard touchdown strike to open the scoring.

Coral Gables got on the board in the second quarter after defensive back Germaine Singletary picked off Fonticella in the end zone and returned it 41 yards.

Five plays later, McCain found Andre Gutierrez streaking down the sideline for a 29-yard touchdown catch.

McCain threw for 108 yards and rushed for 50.

Jarvis Bridge also had a big night for the Cavaliers, rushing for 104 yards.

• Naples Gulf Coast 19, Belen 15: Bo Logan was at the right place at the right time for Naples.

As a result, the Sharks opened their season with the win at De La Cruz Stadium.

Logan intercepted Belen quarterback Nick Platt with 1:51 left in the game to preserve the victory.

In doing so, Logan stopped a furious Belen offensive comeback over the final two minutes of the game.

''We played poorly on the offensive side of the ball in the second half,'' coach Rich Stuart said.

``Our defense did a great job of stopping them, but our offense couldn't do much to help themselves.''

The Wolverines (0-1) scored all 15 points in the second quarter, as running back duo of Sergio Fernandez-Soto and Javi Sosa scored back-to-back on runs of 2 and 7 yards.

''With the loss last week to Columbus and this one here today, we can only get better,'' Stuart said. ``We'll watch the film and make the right adjustments for next week's game against Archbishop Curley.''

Gulf Coast (1-0) took a 19-15 lead midway through the third quarter behind running back Sebastian Zuluaga, who ran for 99 yards on 20 carries. Quarterback Jeff Schmidt also added a convincing air attack with six completions, while running for nearly 50 yards of his own on the ground.

• Westminster Christian 28, St. John Newman 25: Before the Warriors (1-0) took their first offensive snap, they were up 15-0. Jameel Middlebrooks took the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown.

Later in the opening quarter, Matt Apicella returned St. John's next kick 64 yards for a touchdown.

Running back Chris Dunn chipped in with eight carries for 79 yards and added a key fourth-quarter touchdown. Linebacker Kyle Dodds recorded 14 total tackles, including one for a loss.
