MDC advances to district semis

Nick Navarro hit a three-run home run and Miami Dade College advanced to the semifinals of the NJCAA Gulf District baseball championships with a 16-4 drubbing of St. Petersburg College on Sunday in Winter Haven.

The Sharks (44-11), ranked No. 8 in the nation, will play Chipola College or Manatee Community College at 1 p.m. Monday.

On Sunday, Navarro continued his hot streak, going 3 for 4, including two doubles.

Karim Turkamani went 2 for 5 with two RBI and his second home run of the tournament, and shortstop Carmelo Jaime was 3 for 5 with three RBI.

• Late Saturday -- Miami Dade 8, Lake City CC 5: Navarro's two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 5-5 tie and propelled the Sharks.

Eric Berkowitz (10-2), the Southern Conference Reliever of the Year, gave up six hits and no walks and struck out nine. Third-baseman Victor Madrazo was 3 for 4, with three runs scored.

• Pensacola Junior College 11, Broward CC 1: The Seahawks (32-18) were eliminated in Winter Haven by the top-ranked junior college in the state. Anthony Mesa was 2 for 2 with a solo home run.

VOLLEYBALL

Donna Pappas offered good and bad news about the condition of her son, 16-year-old Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons High volleyball player Nick Williams, who was severely injured in a one-car accident May 4.

The bad: Williams, still on a respirator and heavily sedated, has contracted pneumonia, which Pappas said is typical of people in her son's condition.

The good: Nurses recently had to restrain Williams' arm because, in his semiconscious state, he threw a pillow.

''He was going to kill a volleyball one way or another,'' joked Pappas, reached by telephone as family member and friends continued to visit Williams.

Pappas said doctors hope Williams will come off the respirator within a couple of days but that it is ``a waiting game.''

Williams, a junior and one of the Chiefs' best players, led Cardinal Gibbons to the District 9 title. The Chiefs later advanced to state but lost to Boca Raton Spanish River in Friday's quarterfinals.

Ronald Forbes and Porsha Butler each won individual titles for Florida International at the Sun Belt Conference championships in Denton, Texas. Forbes won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.13 seconds. Butler captured the javelin title with a 43.08-meter throw.

ROWING

Miami scullers Harold Fort and Gabriel Fort won the lightweight double rowing regatta finals at the Southeast Youth Championship Regatta of the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association in Tampa. The brothers, members of the Miami Beach Rowing Club and students at Ransom Everglades School, also are the state lightweight double sculling youth champions.
