Emmitt Smith named state's best ever

Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all-time leading rusher, was named the greatest player in the state's 100-year football history Friday night during the Class 5A state championship game at the Citrus Bowl.

Smith, now an announcer for ESPN, taped a video message to accept the honor.

Former McArthur running back Errict Rhett, who was inducted into the Broward County Sports Hall of Fame earlier this week, spoke at length about Smith during his acceptance speech.

Rhett was Smith's roommate on game days at the University of Florida and replaced Smith (and broke his career rushing record at the school) when Smith left for the NFL.

''Those were some big shoes to follow,'' Rhett said. ``At every level, from little league to pros, it's very hard to follow those shoes. This guy broke records that were unimaginable on the high school level, the collegiate level and the professional level. Just to have somebody like that to mentor you, not only just on the field but off the field as well, it was like I was destined to make it.''

TOP COACH

Lakeland High coach Bill Castle was named the top football coach in Florida's history by the Florida High School Athletic Association during the Class 5A championship game.

Castle won seven state championships, including the past three when his team defeated St. Thomas Aquinas each year in the Class 5A final.

Earlier this season, Castle's team saw its 53-game win streak snapped by Kissimmee Osceola in a 25-21 loss. The Dreadnaughts fell 22-9 to Osceola in the rematch and were eliminated in the regional semifinals.

George Smith, who led St. Thomas Aquinas to three championships and won his 300th game during the 2006 season, was selected as one of 11 assistant coaches on the All-Time state staff.

Three Miami-Dade coaches were also selected as assistants -- Nick Kotys, Walt Frazier and Nathaniel 'Traz' Powell.

Gene Cox, Carl Madison, Robby Pruitt, Corky Rogers, Joe Kinnan, Al Werneke and Gerald Odom rounded out the All-Time staff.

CLASS 3A CHAMPIONSHIP

Naples defeated St. Augustine 17-10 to capture the Class 3A championship.

Greg Pratt scored the game-winner on a 34-yard run with 7:58 remaining.

St. Augustine quarterback Kawuan Jakes finished with 276 yards and a touchdown, but was intercepted three times -- including one with 1:04 remaining -- in the loss.

BARASCH COMMITS

University running back Michael Barasch, who set Broward's all-time single season rushing record this year after transferring from St. Thomas Aquinas, orally committed to Florida Atlantic this week.
