Greg Cote's Week 12 NFL picks

Can't complain much. Bull's-eyed our Upset of the Week with Titans winning at Houston ("Aawwk!"), hit another mini-upset outright with Colts at Ravens, and was on the right side with 'dogs Redskins, Browns and Raiders-plus-points. Missed two other games against the spread by one point each. If close counted, I'd be darned good! (Note: Records below do not include Thursday results. Picks were Packers (-10 1/2) over Lions 35-17; Cowboys (-13 1/2) over Raiders 31-16; and Giants (-6) over Broncos 24-20).

Last week: 11-5 (.588), vs. spread 7-7-2 (.500).

Season overall: 104-56 (.650), vs. spread 81-78-8 (.533)

DOLPHINS (5-5) AT BILLS (3-7)

When: 1 p.m. Sunday (CBS)

Line: MIA by 3 Cote's pick: MIA 23-19

This one worries me, and should worry Tony Sparano. Miami fights for its playoff-contending life and, yet, after two wins in a row and with the vaunted Patriots on deck, this looms as a game Miami could take too nonchalantly. Dolphins have beaten Bison three in a row, including a 38-10 spank in October, and Buffs' criminally bad run defense could make it another big fantasy day for Ricky Williams. Yet I can't shake that nagging feeling of dread. The sense this one won't be easy. Cloudy and 40 degrees has something to do with it. Also, Terrell Owens just busted the Jags for 197 receiving yards, and Chad Henne will need to take care against a pick-minded Williams secondary that is second in NFL in interceptions. Make it Dolphins. But nervously.

PATRIOTS (7-3) AT SAINTS (10-0)

When: 8:30 p.m. Monday (ESPN)

Line: NO by 3 Cote's pick: NO 34-30

The Game of the Week committee usually is only unanimous that libations at the Quill 'n Swill should follow deliberations, but in this case the vote was sans dissent. Monday night stage is fit for two kings, as Patriots absolutely rate with 10-0 Saints and Colts as NFL's best teams right now. This has the heft and feel of a very possible Super Bowl preview, and the prospect of a Tom Brady-Drew Brees shootout should send TV ratings heavenward. Saints could clinch division title if Atlanta loses Sunday. Hard to turn down Pats getting points, but make it N'Awlins in a venue pick. Even though game is more important to Patriots and they've won six straight on Monday, watch an electric home crowd demand the best of Saints.

COLTS (10-0) AT TEXANS (5-5)

When: 1 p.m. Sunday

Line: IND by 3 Cote's pick: HOU 27-24

``AAWWK!'' carols the Upset Bird. ``Houston, we have liftoff. Liftaawwk!'' Indy has won a bunch of close games and is due a stumble. More than that, Colts are coasting in division and don't need this game much, whereas Texans are desperate and do. Peyton Manning has owned this series (14-1), but Texans went toe-to-toe in 20-17 loss three weeks ago. Indy clinches division with win if Jax loses. Inevitable is on hold, that's all. ``Schaub-to-Johnson,'' blurts U-Bird, apropos of nothing. ``Matt Schaaawwwk!''

SEAHAWKS (3-7) AT RAMS (1-9)

When: 1 p.m. Sunday

Line: SEA by 3 Cote's pick: SEA 21-17

This matchup giving the NFC West a bad name was voted the Week 12 game Least Likely to Produce a Playoff Team. When your hopes rest with Seattle, you in trouble. St. Lose is a decent outright upset pick if the holidays have put you in a charitable or sympathetic mood. But consider this: Seattle has won nine straight in this series, including a 28-0 pasting in September. And Matt Hasselbeck won't need a ton of offense to top a Rams squad averaging a meager 11 points.
