MMA fighting: Forrest Griffin back on winning track

If parents need an example to show their kids how to overcome a tough sports defeat, they need not look any further than Forrest Griffin.

The former 205-pound UFC champion defeated Tito Ortiz by split decision last Saturday in the main event of UFC 106 in Las Vegas. It was Griffin's first bout since an embarrassing loss in August to middleweight champ Anderson Silva.

After that loss, Griffin was the subject of much ridicule. Although Silva is regarded by most as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the sport, Griffin's performance seemed lethargic and uninspiring. The Las Vegas resident was so hurt by the loss, he refused to discuss it in most prefight interviews leading up to the Ortiz rematch.

To his credit, Griffin got back in the gym, trained hard, and put up a great performance against the man who bested him in April of 2006. Now he's back in the title hunt, and proves you can bounce back from a humbling defeat. Kudos to Griffin.

HARDY OR KOSCHECK?

Another top fighter, Georges St-Pierre, is set to defend his title in early 2010, but against whom -- Dan Hardy or Josh Koscheck?

Both men had impressive wins in November -- Hardy against Mike Swick, and Koscheck versus Anthony Johnson. It appears British native Hardy will get the shot after his three-round dismantling of Swick, but Koscheck, who submitted Johnson in two rounds Saturday, doesn't think Hardy merits the title shot.

Koscheck lost to St-Pierre in 2007, but he believes his wins over higher-quality opponents have earned a rematch against ``Rush''. Koscheck probably will have to wait his turn, but will he live up to his promise to fight 10 to 12 times in 2010? That remains to be seen.

Whom do you, the fan, believe deserves the title shot -- Hardy or Koscheck? You can make your opinion be heard on the comments section below.

KIMBO TO FIGHT ALEXANDER?

The Ultimate Fighter Finale takes place Saturday, Dec. 5, and South Florida's own Kimbo Slice will be on the card against an opponent to be named. But that opponent has been long believed to be Houston Alexander. Alexander went as far as stating in a radio interview he'll be fighting ``Kevin Ferguson'' -- Slice's real name.

If the fight takes place it should be an exciting one that Kimbo could win. Kimbo's strength is his power. Alexander, as we've seen, is a fighter that will be in front of Kimbo. He is, however, a power puncher as well. Just ask Keith Jardine.

The 37-year-old Alexander is 9-4 in his MMA career, but only 2-3 since that career-best win against Jardine in 2007. Kimbo, 35, is 3-1 in official bouts, although he has since lost in the ``TUF'' reality show. The bout would take place at heavyweight and not at Alexander's customary fighting weight of 205.
