FIU captures awards in Sun Belt volleyball

Winners of 23 consecutive matches and sporting a perfect 17-0 record in Sun Belt Conference play, the FIU volleyball team (30-2) racked up plenty of Sun Belt awards.
Three-time FIU All-American Yarimar Rosa was selected Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and to the all-conference first team for the fourth year in a row.
``It is a great honor to be named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, with all the great players in our conference,'' said Rosa, who is vying for a fourth consecutive All-American honor as well.
FIU freshman Jovana Bjelica was named SBC Freshman of the Year and coach Danijela Tomic was selected SBC Coach of the Year for the third time, as she led the Golden Panthers to a school-record 17 conference wins.
FIU also placed two players each on the All-SBC first and second teams, as junior Natalia Valentin joined Rosa on the first team and senior Olga Vergun joined Bjelica on the second team.
Panthers senior Isadora Rangel, junior Ashlyn Balenseifer and sophomore Sabrina Gonzalez were named to the Commissioner's List, which honors student-athletes with a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. Rosa was joined by junior Ines Medved on the Academic Honor Roll, which honors student-athletes with GPA's of 3.0 or higher.
FLORIDA MEMORIAL
Florida Memorial sophomore Sudanne Stewart was selected as the first Sun Conference women's basketball Player of the Week for this season.
Stewart scored 20 points in the Lions' 80-78 overtime loss to Bethune Cookman.
Stewart was 5 of 10 from the field, including a 4-for-5 night from the three-point line.
BARRY
Buccaneers junior Julia Teixiera was selected to the 2009 All-Sunshine State Conference Volleyball Team.
Teixiera earned second-team All-SSC honors at the opposite hitter position. She ranks first on the team in kills (364), third on the team in assists (74), second on the team in digs (235), and tied for first on the team in service aces (36).
NOVA SOUTHEASTERN
Nova Southeastern freshman middle blocker Carly Perschnick was selected as the Sunshine State Conference Volleyball Freshman of the Year.
Perschnick averaged 2.68 kills, 0.73 blocks and 0.38 digs per set. Her .331 hitting percentage ranks fifth among all SSC players.
NSU junior libero Kathleen Yony was named to the All-SSC first team. Yony led the Sharks and was among the SSC leaders with 4.67 digs per set.
Senior All-America setter Valia Petrova earned second-team All-SSC honors. She is among SSC and national leaders with 10.58 assists per set.
