Westminster rallies past Palmer Trinity

Heat coach Pat Riley wrote the word `season' on a clipboard during a defining moment of the NBA Finals, and it worked. Westminster Academy volleyball coach Katie McCrath did not use a marker Saturday night but had her own method of motivation.

Westminster libero Jennifer Walsh said: ``After we lost the second game [in the best-of-5 match], Coach told us in the huddle, `Scream out your frustrations. Get it all out now, and then go play your game.' ''

So the Lions screamed loudly, returned to the court and played their game.

It worked. Down two games to none to last season's state runner-up, the Lions pulled off a dramatic comeback Saturday in upsetting Miami Palmer Trinity 19-25, 17-25, 25-23, 28-26, 15-13 to win the Region 4-2A title in Fort Lauderdale.

At the end of the regular season, Palmer defeated the Lions twice (four games, three games) in a home-and-home series. Counting the first two games of regionals, the Falcons won eight of nine games against Westminster.

After McCrath's tactic, the Lions won the more important ones, the next three -- which included a season-saving rally from a 24-21 deficit in Game 4 -- to capture the region title.

A solid defense led by star hitter Leigh Andrew, Julia Appleby, Brenna Pelletier and Walsh, coupled with strong middle play by Mackenzie Keightley, setting by Emily McMurtrey and sound contributions from Amelia Bohlander, Betsy Botkin, Megan Dunn, Katie Hepp and Paige Kniskern keyed the turnaround.
